Damping Off

Omfallsjuke

How to recognise it

Seedlings suddenly collapse at soil level. The stem appears pinched, water-soaked, or shrivelled just above the soil line. Affected seedlings cannot be revived.

Prevention

Use fresh, sterile seed compost every season; never reuse old compost for sowing. Water sparingly: let the surface dry between waterings. Ensure pots and trays have good drainage. Thin seedlings promptly to prevent overcrowding.

Treatment

There is no cure once damping off takes hold. Remove affected seedlings immediately to prevent spread to neighbours. Reduce watering, improve drainage, and increase airflow for remaining plants. Resow into fresh, sterile compost.
